Nursing shortage
This is my newsworthy post about a current event on how less people are interested in the field of nursing and how having a shortage of nurses are affecting people's lives. My newsworthy article is from CQ researchers.
“A serious shortage of registered nurses (RNs) is forcing thousands of U.S. hospitals to function with skeleton crews, possibly causing hundreds of unnecessary deaths and injuries. Many nurses are simply getting old and retiring, but many experts blame the shortage on low pay, poor working conditions and low enrollments in nursing schools. Meanwhile short-staffed hospitals are taking controversial steps such as offering large signing bonuses and recruiting nurses from overseas. Nationwide, there was a shortage in 2001 of 126,000 full-time RNs, but the shortage will surge to 808,000 by 2020 if something isn't done. Even more worrisome, many disaster experts say last year's terrorist attacks dramatized the possibility that a chemical, biological or nuclear attack could overwhelm the nation's nursing workforce.” (Hansen, Brian. “Nursing Shortage.” CQ Researcher, library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/getpdf.php?id=cqresrre2002092000.)
According to the washington post hospitals are doing whatever they can to attract people to get into nursing like giving bonuses up to $5,000 in their first year, vacations, trips and foreign recruiting or if a nurse recruit another nurse they can get up to $500 reward because once again there a nationwide shortage of nurses. Hospitals are now depending on private nursing agencies or setting their own pools of temporary nurses.
“Number of students in nursing programs at the bachelor's degree level declined this year to 12.6 percent below last year, falling to 66,654 from 76,232, the American
Association of Colleges of Nursing.”(search.proquest.com/docview/306888686/A9EFF22B95564FADPQ/17?accountid=36540.)
